LEED Certification LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Over the past decade numerous public, private, and non-profit organizations have developed standards for evaluating the environmental soundness of buildings using quantitative rating systems. Green standards generally have goals of benefiting (or reducing damage to) the natural environent, and enhancing the health and comfort of the indoor environment.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) developed the LEED standards for whole building performance evaluation. Ratings exist for the following types:
- New Construction
- Existing Construction
- Commercial Interiors (for tenants)
- Core and Shell Development (for owners of leased facilities)
In addition to these four types, standards are currently being developed for homes and neighborhoods. Our products are well suited for meeting the standards for all these types. We are especially well positioned to help with retrofitting existing construction with lighting and HVAC controls, given our flexible products and customizable solutions.
LEED rates building performance in the following categories:
- Sustainable Sites
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Innovation and Design Process
For each building type and category, point credits are awarded for achieving specified standards. Buildings with enough points are awarded LEED status as “certified,” “silver,” “gold,” or “platinum.”
In both the Energy and Atmosphere and Indoor Environmental Quality categories, LEED specifies HVAC and lighting control systems and demonstrated optimized energy efficiency. As of June 2007, the Optimize Energy Efficiency subcategory of Energy and Atmosphere has mandatory point minima.
